A site
Dear all:
Today I’d like to tell you about a place I enjoy visiting. There are a number of websites I like visiting, but today I’ll refer to a few. I started visiting “alternative “news sites a long time ago, when I realized what you could see through mass media was only part of the story, or a part to make us believe what was more convenient for the authorities. I was born in Temuco and, as a child; I used to visit Vilcun often because my family has some land there. Unfortunately, I got to know the way my family and other families got the land there. This somehow opened my eyes to alternative realities not known to most people.
I cannot talk about favorite websites but I can tell you what I visit most at the moment. There is a site called https://ciperchile.cl/ . This is a serious research center . I also visit a Russian website called https://www.rt.com/news/ what I like about these websites is the fact that they deal a lot with social issues that are either shown slightly or not shown at all on mass media. I also like www.elmostrador.cl and sometimes look at www.elciudadano.cl . This last one I find a bit of a downer at times so I do not see it that often.
There is a website I really like which deals with brain research in a simple and not so simple way is www.brainfacts.org

On a lighter note, I really enjoy www.ted.com I can see some amazing talks from designers, humanists, scientists or just people who, 95% of the time, have something really interesting to say. And why not mention it, I love www.youtube.com and all the stuff you can learn about virtually anything on it.

Today I would like to write about injustice and the complexity of humans.
I have worked in he Faculty of social sciences for 12 years. In 2012 I was offered a contract due to my good evaluation by students and colleagues. At the time I was very happy for this recognition of my effort as a teacher.
However, in 2017,the new undergraduate director asked me and 3 colleagues to do 3 more courses for the same salary. That meant 1/3more work for the same money. We politely said "no, thank you"
The harassment got worse and this year, we were asked to work double the time for the same money. We have been to meetings with this woman (directora de pregrado) and explained how unfair this is and how little value they see in our work as English teachers.
Some time ago, I left a private university which paid me much better, to come and work in Universidad de Chile exclusively.
Last Monday I recived a letter reading I will be dismissed from the faculty in December 2018. The reason why I wanted to write about this is because I am shocked that something that started as an abusive idea turned into something personal because this person could not get away with making us work more for the same money. This is a person that earns approximately 10 times what I earn. And who says that the English programme is too expensive. However, the faculty demands students to do 5 levels.
I think this kind of practice is becoming more and more common in Universidad de Chile and in public institutions. For some reasons that I can understand but do not share, a lot of people are willing to be abused just to keep a position in a public institution.
I do not agree with it and luckily, I trust there will be other work in other faculties or a different Uni as well.

A Job
When I think about a future job, there are 3 things that come to mind. An animal rescuer, a teacher in a rural school and a pilates instructor.
Today I will refer to the first one first. I
have always loved nature and animals. One of my dreams would be to have a
rescue center for stray cats and dogs that walk the streets, go through a lot
of rough experiences with insensitive people, and certainly need care and
affection.
I think you need a lot of qualities to do this job, first of all a lot of sensitivity and patience, also some instruction into first aids and nutrition,. Lastly, some training on how to deal with wild animals. Other than that, one needs a lot of money since these animals need some space, ifrastructure, food and also medical treatment quite often. My dream would be to buy a big piece of land so all of them could run and play with each other.
The satisfaction would be quite high since
knowing that there are fewer animals in the streets and being taken care
of, would certainly make a difference in my life. It would make me very happy
Moreover, I think all animals and creatures are
amazing. I think humans can be very arrogant thinking that because they are
more intelligent, they deserve more care. I think we are all on this planet for
a reason. We need to show respect and care for one another. In this sense, the
disappointment I have had with humans I know I could never have with animals.

Reading
Today we are going to write about something I like.
It has been hard to choose because I am often reading more than one thing at the time. I read the newspaper, academic papers, stuff on meditation, the brain, essays, my students' blogs, about health etc.
I started reading about the brain some years back when I studied language acquisition and education = learning processes. I have to say I have read quite a bit about the brain and personality and it nevere ceases to amaze me.
However, at the moment I am not reading about the brain. I am reading two books. One is called "the book of strange new things" by Michel Faber. This is a science fiction novel which is interesting and set in the future on a devastated earth and a far planet with alliens. It is about how this human couple live apart while she is expecting a baby on earth and how he deals with alliens being a religious priest on this far planet.
Another book I am reading is one called "Gut "The inside story of of our body's most unde- rated organ" by doctor Guilia Enders. This is an interesting book since it refers to processes that happen in our body and how what we eat and how we prepare food can affect from the movement of our bowels to the weight we have and how we emotionally feel. .It also has some really interesting illustrations and drawings that attempt to describe processes which happen in our stomach or intestines.

Presentation
Today we will write about the 3:30 minute individual oral presentation. This can be about an author or a particular theory or topic related to your area of studies
In my presentation I will talk about the linguist, philosopher, cognitive scientist, historian and activist Avram Noam Chomsky.
I will divide my presentation into 3 parts
I will refer to his work as a linguist, activist and will explain why I chose him.
Noam Chomsky was born in the city of Pennsylvania in the state of Philadelphia.
He was the son to Jewish parents.
He studied linguistics at the University of Pennsylvania.

Thursday 18
A nice walk you remember
I know this is not something we
often write about, but I thought I’d tell you about one of the nice walks we
have done in our lives. Since I am a nature lover, I seem to enjoy most
settings and landscapes. However, today I’ll refer to one that was different in
terms of temperature. A couple of years ago I had the chance to
visit Costa Rica. We decided to go to the Atlantic coast first and
visited the national park in “Cahuita”. This was a really beautiful experience
since I had the chance to see amazing plants, butterflies, monkeys, huge
iguanas in the natural habitat, raccoons, birds and colorful crabs.
That first time there was really
amazing because I wasn’t sure what to expect and I was really surprised by
everything I saw and heard. The colours, the fact that it was
raining but the temperature was 26 degrees and other things made it all really special .

On this post I will explain how the blog work will be assessed.
Two marks will be averaged. Mark 1 is for continuous assessment (i.e. coming to class and posting IN class).If you come to class & write the right number of words, plus the ideas your are asked to express, you get 2 points. If you don't come to class & post from anywhere else within 24 hours, you get 1 point. After that there are no points,but you can still write for the sake of learning.
Mark 2 is for 3 particular posts that will be evaluated in terms of (ideas (n° of words), word range & grammar). If the post is not there when it is marked, you get a 1.0 for that post. These 3 marks are evaluated and give an average final mark.
Ps: You can use www.wordreference.com but NO translators.If you do the latter, you will get a 1.0 & no points for your post.
MARK 1 +MARK 2= /2 = FINAL MARK

National Holiday
I don't normally get involved with the celebrations for Fiestas Patrias or the national holidays. Reason being, I feel nowadays there is little independence to refer to. Moreover, I am not a nationalistic person. I always wonder how the native people in our country feel during these celebrations. But let’s face it; it is a great opportunity to have a relaxing time. I used to go to barbeques with friends or house parties but I never enjoyed going to fondas in Santiago because I always found them over-crowded and over-priced. In fact the only fonda I ever really enjoyed was 15 or 18 years ago (hahahha) when I went to Algarrobo. I went with my darling husband, a British friend of his, Karen, and a very good Chilean friend of mine, Claudio. Connie, Claudio’s girlfriend at the time, was there too. Claudio's parents have a house in Algarrobo and we went to stay there for a couple of days. It was great being near the beach and getting some fresh sea air. Also, the weather was warm and sunny during the daytime and not too cold in the evenings.
The fonda was on the main road leading into Algarrobo and we went twice on consecutive evenings. There were lots of people but the atmosphere was friendly. We did the typical things like play some games, eat empanadas and drink chicha. There was music and people dancing cueca. Later on we drank piscolas and danced (shuffled about!!) to cumbias.
We all enjoy our national holiday for different reasons, I suppose.

My name is Beatriz and I am an English teacher. I have a number of interests and I am constantly studying new things. After I finished my Masters, I decided I would never do something academic again. At the moment, I am doing a webinar on Alzheimer’s disease and also learning Japanese.
I love animals and I don’t eat them. I also love nature so trekking is one of my past times.
